Marieke (she/they) began her career as a classical singer, choral director and voice teacher, then found the Alexander Technique. She trained in the Technique for 10 years, shaping her singing and teaching, until she became certified first as an Andover Educator (Bodymapping, 2006), then as an Alexander Technique teacher (in 2016). She teaches clients how to breathe and activate their voice, how to move according to their body's design, and how to access their mind-body connection. She specializes in vocal therapy, working with clients who have vocal challenges due to overuse or misuse.
When the COVID pandemic temporarily closed Cantare Studio in 2020, Marieke rediscovered her passion for birthwork, having felt empowered by her own birthing experiences and realizing the bonding impact on the new mother/baby dyad. She became a Traditional Health Worker (THW) Birth Doula (DONA International, 2022). She understood that the combination of the Alexander Technique and Birth Doula training would allow her to teach birthing persons to really listen to their bodies and breathe their way through the process of birth. She supports all birthing persons and their families, regardless of race or gender.
Marieke is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), Alexander Technique International (ATI), DONA International, and the Oregon Doula Association.
