Marieke is vocologist, voice trainer, Andover Educator, and Alexander Technique teacher. She understands what it is like to have limitations, as she has both asthma and scoliosis. She studied the Alexander Technique in order to understand and overcome those limitations, to sing opera and jazz, to dance, to bicycle, ride a motorcycle and wakeboard.
Marieke is the Northwest Regional Governor for the National Assoc. of Teachers of Singing. She studied the Alexander Technique with Alice Pryor, Barbara Conable, Cathy Madden, Catherine Kettrick, David Mills and Michael Frederick. She is certified by Alexander Technique International.
Marieke has performed main stage roles with Eugene Opera and Cascadia Concert Opera, two Pacific Northwest companies, as well as with several professional small ensembles. More recently, she explored jazz, first with an originals group, ElegantM, then as a solo artist. She released Marieke Schuurs & the Eugene Jazz Collective, a collection of jazz/blues standards, in 2018.
